In the early morning hours of Wednesday 7 June 2023, Israeli Occupation Forces arrested the Birzeit University graduate student Layan Kayed after raiding and severely damaging the inside of her home in the city of Ramallah. The raiding force also confiscated personal belongings from her home, such as laptops and a cell phone. Layan was transferred for interrogation at Ofer Interrogation Center, where an order was issued banning her from meeting with her lawyer. The military court extended her detainment for eight additional days with no access to a lawyer.
Layan is a former political prisoner who spent 16 months in incarceration following her arrest in 2020 after she was charged by the Occupation’s military prosecutor over her student and union activities within the campus of the university. She currently holds the position of a Coordinator of the Palestinian Coalition for Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights "Adala", and pursues her graduate studies in Social Development at Birzeit University.
