10 Days of Detention for the Man who Assaulted Addameer's Lawyer

Ramallah – 7 June 2018 – Yesterday the Palestinian Military court sentenced the accused of assaulting a Palestinian citizen to ten days of detention. On 4 October 2016, the accused have assaulted Muhannad Karajah, Addameer’s lawyer, while he was documenting a non-violent protest in commemoration for al-Aqsa uprising.

The military prosecution previously gave a list of charges to two people, and the list included: harming a citizen and misusing authority. The first person accused was innocent and the second was sentenced for harming a citizen.

Addameer’s lawyer, Muhannad Karajah, stated that “This sentencing is really important to show all Palestinian security forces that they cannot misuse their authority of using excessive force against peaceful protesters. This decision comes as a form of protection for protester and human rights defender.”

Addameer association considers this decision as one step forward towards building a system based on principles of law and accountability. Also a system that respects human rights and the rights of the public.
