The world watches as tragedy unfolds beneath its gaze. Khader Adnan is entering his 61st day as a hunger striker in an Israeli prison, being held under an administrative detention order without trial, charges, or any indication of the evidence against him.

Addameer demands the immediate release of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike currently held without charge or trial by Israel. The duration of his administrative detention has been set at 4 months, due to expire on 8 May 2012.

On 18 December, 550 Palestinian prisoners were released in completion of the second phase of the prisoner exchange deal concluded by the Israeli government and Hamas authorities on 11 October. In contrast to the first phase of the prisoner releases, which saw 477 mutually agreed upon prisoners released on 18 October in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, Israeli authorities selected the names of the 550 prisoners released in this phase. Addameer’s analysis of the list of released prisoners reveals that 65 percent of the prisoners were due to be released by the end of 2012, including 100 with release dates in December 2011 and January 2012 alone.

Israeli Occupying Forces (IOF) have arrested nearly 470 Palestinians since 18 October 2011, when 477 Palestinian political prisoners were released in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit as part of the first phase of the prisoner exchange deal concluded by the Israeli government and Hamas authorities. This wave of arrests reveals that the exchange deal has not deterred Israel’s policy of detention of Palestinians; rather, Israeli prisons are being refilled with almost the exact number of Palestinians that were released in October. Even the released prisoners were not safe from harassment, as the IOF has regularly raided their homes, issued summons to meet with Israeli intelligence and re-arrested one individual.

On Saturday 5 November, Addameer lawyer Mahmoud Hassan testified at the third international session of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine, held in Cape Town, South Africa. Speaking on the topic of denial of the right to life and liberty as an act of apartheid, Mr. Hassan addressed the different legal regimes governing the arrest, prosecution and detention of Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip, and inside Israel.
